Heartstoppers

Vicki Corley / Comment on this

When I look at this painting I feel like dancing! It tickles my funny bone. Like lollipops, dreams, monsters, and sweet little girls all together and having fun. Let's boogie! (Lots of red, red dresses, lollipops, stairways, hills, .....)

An Eye on You

Vicki Corley / Comment on this

Here, the whites seem stronger than the red, receding and advancing. Peering through, sliding behind, dynamic but easily overshadowed by "the eye."

Red Advancing

Vicki Corley / Comment on this

This painting is one of a series of abstracts, based upon intuition, in search of a theme as of now. I'm amazed that Red is such a predominant color in the series.

What do you feel or think of when you see the image? I wonder what it suggests about my state of mind since I started it, back in March 2021.

I'm Upset, so Bossuet Enzo Raph

Vicki Corley / Comment on this

Hi,

I don't feel at ease with writing, so I seldom write, much less about politics. Words are too slippery. And I don't have that talent. But....

"One person, one vote." Although the US electoral process circumvents that principle to some extent, each state certifies its election process, so why is there a hue and cry that this election was "stolen"? Surrendering one's country to people like Hitler or Trump, is far worse than President Biden could ever be.

So thank goodness we have the youth poet laureate, Amanda Gorman, to write something inspiring about this inauguration!

How is this related to painting??? I have been so upset since January 6th; it's been hard to paint! This painting felt like the right expression for my crashing, crushing, crazy emotions, and fear that democracy can so easily be lost.

I painted it, however, in a quite different mood! The gardens here, at the cathedral ("Bossuet's cathedral) are just beautiful in summer, with flowers of all colors and types splashing in the sunshine. That was its mood.

For the style, I asked Raphaelle and Enzo which styles in my studio appealed most to them. They liked the street art-ish style where I used Posca markers - but not writing a name.

These last paragraphs seem so crystal clear to me!

(I'm purposely writing before watching the news on the 20th.)

Reflections #4

Vicki Corley / Comment on this

Reflections #4, huile/oil on panel, 24x18cm, about 9x7 in.

The Marne overflows, and the lowlands nature preserve welcomes the water. In Spring 2020, these trees were reflected in the lakes formed by the flooding. I was there with paints and painting knives.

Comme d'habitude, je travaillais au couteau.

Confinement #3

Vicki Corley / Comment on this

"Confinement #3"

Maybe the "eye" here is rather like my own spirit, questioning a strangely different universe. Sometimes dark and mysterious, the confinement series searched for me, tapped me on the shoulder, insisted that I needed to paint it.

Forced to be alone by lockdown restrictions, I had a look deep into spirit. I started the painting after doing a spiral-like drawing, with "an eye." It reminded me of Ocean's Eye, in the 2012 “Eye” series, where I seem to peer into the spirit eye of the whale, the ocean, or an American Indian desert environment.

In the confinement paintings, it’s a watchful "eye." I'm closed in, looking out, wary.

Confinement n° 3

Confinement series #4

Vicki Corley / Comment on this

20 x 20 cm x .3

Confinement Series #4

When forced to be alone by confinement (lockdown) restrictions, I had to look deep into spirit. I started this painting after doing a spiral-like drawing, with depth and "an eye." (It reminds me of a series from 2012, Whale's Eye, Indian Eye, Ocean's Eye, etc. The "eye" in those paintings was like the spirit of ocean, American Indian life, the whale).

The "eye" in these paintings is more my own spirit, questioning a strangely different universe. It feels closed in and looking out.

Celebration

Vicki Corley / 2 Comments

« Celebration »

la collection Fall and Winter,  https://www.vcorley.com/collections/153681

When I worked in the print studio with Boyd Saunders creating this series of monotypes, only one or two of them had a photo as starting point. This one and most of them came from intuition, celebrations of color and gesture. For this one though I now see a story, a woman in a festival, celebrating perhaps a baby to be born.

From website archives to appear in the new Fall and Winter collection.

Waterlilies, in French

Comment on this

Hi

Here's my first blog in French, inspired by an admirer in Paris

Bonjour

She kindly wrote also in English:

“Thank u so much

I feel such delicacy sensitivity and sensuality in your paintings, loved especially Waterlilies, saw in it the Little Prince (St Exupery) oasis dream when he’s in the desert, his blond, yellow hair and blue legs and arms delighted with fresh water...”
