Noh theater is structured around song and dance. Movement is slow, language is poetic, tone is monotonous, and costumes are rich and heavy. Plots are usually drawn from legend, history, literature and contemporary events. Themes often relate to dreams, supernatural worlds, ghosts and spirits.
Noh (能, Nō) is a form of theater involving music, dance and drama, originating in the 14th century. It was developed together with kyogen, which are comical pieces performed during interludes of the main noh performance. The dual art of noh and kyogen is known as nogaku, and has been designated an Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO.

Ce tableau me fait rigoler! Incongru, tout est inattendu, comme dans un rêve, des juxtapositions qui surprennent. Je pense à l'amour, les monstres, les espaces interconnectés, danser, l'attirance, mais pas trop rassurante.
When I look at this painting I feel like dancing! It tickles my funny bone. Like lollipops, dreams, monsters, and sweet little girls all together and having fun. Let's boogie! (Lots of red, red dresses, lollipops, stairways, hills, .....)

Encore du rouge, je commence à m'y faire. La douceur du rouge ? La férocité des passions! Attention au rouge.
Here, the whites seem stronger than the red, receding and advancing. Peering through, sliding behind, dynamic but easily overshadowed by "the eye."

Ce tableau fait partie d'une série à la recherche d'une âme d'abstraction.
This painting is one of a series of abstracts, based upon intuition, in search of a theme as of now. I'm amazed that Red is such a predominant color in the series.
What do you feel or think of when you see the image? I wonder what it suggests about my state of mind since I started it, back in March 2021.

I started this painting while learning new acrylic techniques in July 2012, and I just finished it in 2020! Sometimes it's a really long process!
You can still see the fine schrim of acrylic that I collaged to the canvas in 2013. Last Spring, it became a joyful celebration, of flowers and warm rays of sun, as I was painting over the acrylic with oils.
There's a playful companion piece called "Monsters Play," with more saturated colors, on my website, www.vcorley.com

Happy Easter 2021 !

Hello again,
"As if I were about to fall into a whirlpool, my attention is quickly lured by the smoothness and circular movement which drags my gaze, inevitably, into the depths.
I wanted to linger on the smoothness, the seductive curves, of those cold, blue rose petals, but I had no choice… I can feel myself falling into that black hole despite all my efforts to resist.
And I am not the first to fall, judging by the white scratching and scrabbling marks of those that have gone - disappeared - before me. They must mark the desperate attempts of others to resist the descent into that void. But there is nothing to be done… See how the marks multiply as the speed of descent increases towards the abyss in the centre of the painting, where there is no possibility of anything other than a bone-chilling loneliness (or worse)?
We become the mad, foaming playthings of the vortex as it sweeps us, to a place we don’t want to go. Whatever awaits us there (and there is no way of knowing) we have no choice but to accept it as our fate.
But if the painting takes me on a physical journey into and beyond confinement, it also makes sure that I know why I am being taken to this awful place… The pandemic is written large over the painting. I can see it in the unforgiving blue, black and white, in the starkness of these colours and in their strangeness, The forms may masquerade as an oddly coloured rose, but they reject any sense of safety or comfort. No, this is something alien, something which defies our attempts to understand or tame it.
I feel as if I should be protected and cocooned, but instead, and far sooner than I wanted, I am being taken into this black, unknown heart where I have no knowledge of what is happening to me, nor why."
To all of you, thank you for allowing yourself to be carried away and into my work!
Now, I want to paint more, hoping to inspire some more powerful super-short stories like the one above.
Vicki
I don't feel at ease with writing, so I seldom write, much less about politics. Words are too slippery. And I don't have that talent. But....
"One person, one vote." Although the US electoral process circumvents that principle to some extent, each state certifies its election process, so why is there a hue and cry that this election was "stolen"? Surrendering one's country to people like Hitler or Trump, is far worse than President Biden could ever be.
So thank goodness we have the youth poet laureate, Amanda Gorman, to write something inspiring about this inauguration!
How is this related to painting??? I have been so upset since January 6th; it's been hard to paint! This painting felt like the right expression for my crashing, crushing, crazy emotions, and fear that democracy can so easily be lost.
I painted it, however, in a quite different mood! The gardens here, at the cathedral ("Bossuet's cathedral) are just beautiful in summer, with flowers of all colors and types splashing in the sunshine. That was its mood.
For the style, I asked Raphaelle and Enzo which styles in my studio appealed most to them. They liked the street art-ish style where I used Posca markers - but not writing a name.
These last paragraphs seem so crystal clear to me!
(I'm purposely writing before watching the news on the 20th.)
