This is a new way of painting I've been working at since 2016, and it's still evolving. There are some other examples on my website at https://www.vcorley.com/collections/129100

For this "expressionist" style,  I start from nature or another kind of model. The painting may look like the model, or it may turn out very differently, or even abstract in style. I call it expressionist, because to me it seems more based on feelings than on something photographic. For the moment, most of these paintings are smaller.

At other times now (and most of the time before 2016), I start from gestural inspiration, making a beginning from thoughts, emotions, events, my sketches, etc. The abstract paintings evolve slowly from that loose intuitive beginning into something I appreciate, usually as a result of long "conversations" between and among the colors and shapes on the canvas. I'm always listening.
